Dear Colleagues

Dr. Craig Barnes, Professor and Department Head

Great things are happening at the University of Tennessee, Department of Chemistry that we want you to know about!  We have advanced our research program recently in many exciting ways and our faculty would love to have the opportunity to visit your school to let your students know about current research and recent highlights such as:

We have hired six new assistant professors in wide-ranging areas of research.  New faculty include: Michael Best (Organic & Bio-organic Chemistry), Jon Camden (Analytical & Physical Chemistry), Shawn Campagna (Bio-organic & Analytical Chemistry), Shane Foister(Organic & Organometallic Chemistry), David Jenkins (Inorganic Chemistry) and Frank Vogt (Analytical Chemistry).  We are excited about these new faculty members as they represent the future of our program. Please check out their group and home web pages at http://www.chem.utk.edu/faculty.html .

The Chemistry Department has benefited from the unique Tennessee Governor’s Chairs Program, designed to recruit top research scientists to joint positions at both the University and Oak Ridge National Lab.  Recently, we successfully recruited Alexei Sokolov, formerly the Thomas A. Knowles Professor of Polymer Science at the University of Akron. Dr. Sokolov will further establish our prominent Polymer Chemistry program as well as our strategic partnership with Oak Ridge National Lab.  We are also moving on additional Governor’s Chairs appointments and are excited about the impact this program will have on our department.

The department has recently acquired significant new instrumentation such as:  A 500 MHz NMR to go with our 250, 300, 400 (x2) and 600 MHz instruments; several new mass spectrometers including a high-resolution DART-TOF and a Q-star Q-TOF LCMS; as well as a new powder X-ray diffractometer.  Check these out at our instrumentation web site:  http://www.chem.utk.edu/facilities.html .

These are just a few of the exciting things that are happening in our department. Our faculty would very much enjoy visiting the students and faculty of your department (at our expense, of course!) to discuss research and recent events in the Chemistry Department at UT. Please refer to the list summarizing the seminars that our faculty members have designed for undergraduate audiences.  Please share this with your seminar coordinator and contact us if your department would like to schedule a visit by one of the UT Chemistry faculty. If you do not have a formal seminar program, we would also like to help arrange an alternate format, such as interactions with a SAACS group, etc.
