Why Chemistry ?!
- Because it's Chemistry! The three Pillars of Science are Matter, Life and the Mind. Chemistry is the study of matter and energy in the universe. Chemisty is so unique that it's fundamental to the study of all other basic sciences.
- Because it's the gateway to a broad range of career opportunities.
- Because it's fun! Chemistry is a hands-on major. Instead of spending all your time in a lecture hall, you will conduct your own experiments in the lab and enjoy many undergraduate research opportunities.

- There are many opportunities for chemistry majors to participate in undergraduate research projects with faculty.
- We offer many areas of study: analytical, synthetic, inorganic, physical and materials chemistry.
- Chemistry majors may also graduate with honors in chemistry.
- We offer state-of-the-art instrumentations including Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMRs), Mass Spectrometry, Polymer Characterization, Raman and X-ray facilities that undergraduate students can use in their projects.
- We have Student Affiliates of the American Chemical Society (SAACS)
- You can now complete a major in chemistry and receive a secondary education teaching certificate in four years at UT Knoxville by participating the new VolsTeach program
Student Affiliates of the American Chemical Society
The Student Affiliates of the American Chemical Society or SAACS for short is an undergraduate organization for those interested in chemistry. The UT chapter of SAACS holds monthly meetings where they share a meal and social atmosphere and hear an invited speaker discuss specific aspects of chemistry and current research in areas of chemistry.
The Student Affiliates also participate in a wide variety of departmental and campus-wide activities including Homecoming in the Fall and Chem Camp in the Summer.
