Physical Chemistry

The Physical Chemistry Division conducts experimental and theoretical research in a wide range of areas: spectroscopic investigations of nanoscale and magnetic materials; physical mechanisms for the production of chirality; x-ray and neutron spectroscopy of surfaces and materials; reaction dynamics and quantum chemistry; optical and electron spectroscopies; thermodynamics, computer simulation, and interfacial control of polymers; and film growth and surface chemistry. Many of our students and faculty are also involved in the synthesis and investigation of new materials. Research in physical, theoretical, and computational chemistry is carried out with students and postdoctoral fellows as well as a growing list of collaborators within the department, at Oak Ridge National Laboratory, and throughout the world.
