Applying to the UT Chemistry Graduate Program
Instructions for non-U.S. applicants
Please note that as of January 1, 2008 the Department of Chemistry has instituted use of a new on-line application system that can be used to apply for teaching assistantship postitions, upload supporting documents, transcripts and scores, and automatically request reference and recomendation letters. This system also allows applicants to view where they are in the selection and admissions process. This system will be used in addition to the paper system for applicants applying for Fall 2008. To register and begin using the new on-line system please read and understand the requirements for admission and follow this LINK.
Thank you for your interest in the Department of Chemistry. The
following steps outline the application process for a Graduate Teaching
Assistantship AND to begin the application process for admissions
to the Graduate School at the University of Tennessee. It is important
to note that these are separate applications which may contain similar
requirements and supporting documentation. The process for completing
both applications is described in detail below.

Complete a graduate teaching assistantship (GTA) application.
You can print the application form
in PDF format. You can also apply
online. (Note that the online application will be displayed
in a new browser window on your screen.)

Have three people who know you well complete a recommendation
form on your behalf. Chemistry professors, research supervisors,
and employers typically provide the most useful recommendations
for graduate study in chemistry. These recommendation forms
should be sent to the address listed above in step 1.

Send us transcripts from all colleges you have attended and
a copy of your official GRE general exam scores. This material
should be sent to the address listed above as well.
- GRE - Average range of combined GRE scores (Quantitative
+ Verbal) for students who apply to the graduate program is
1150-1350.

If your native language is not English, you must take the
Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) exam and send
us a copy of your score. In addition, to qualify for a teaching
assistantship, you must provide evidence that you are able to
communicate in English. If English was the language
of instruction at your undergraduate institution, this may provide
evidence of your ability to communicate in English. Contact
us for more information in this case.
- The minimun iBT score is an 80 with at least a 20 in the speaking portion of this exam.

Apply to the University's Office of Graduate & International Admissions. This
application can be completed online. If the Department of Chemistry extends you an offer to become a Graduate Teaching Assistant and you enroll in the University the Department will provide reimbursement for the Application Fee associated with the application to the Office of Graduate & International Admissions in your enterance scholarship.
The deadline for initiating the Graduate School application
and paying the application fee is February 1 for Fall semester
admission. Applications must then be completed by May 15.
